Oh, son! It’s another Friday Finale historical photo, this time dating back to 1988 and featuring that “Great American Fisherman,” Roland Martin. In this article by Associated press writer Bill Schultz, Roland went in depth on pattern fishing. A few excerpts from the story sharing some of Roland’s tips follows.
> “You’ve got to believe in your patterns. Once you’ve set up your patterns, water temperature, water clarity, that you’re dealing with, whatever the pH or sun condition might be, you have to believe in the pattern and not deviate. In a big lake, there’s maybe 100 pattern combinations.”
> “Once you catch a fish on a spinnerbait, you’ve got to examine everything, because the next one will be in that exact set of conditions. Those conditions include everything from water condition to type of cover, water depth and relationship to deep water.”
> “The easiest tip that I have in spinnerbait fishing is to be an opportunist. Take the best opportunity. Go for the warmest water you can find. It is generally the best opportunity.”
> “In bigger lakes, there can be a tremendous variance in water temperature. You can have up to a 15-degree difference from a warm, shallow, muddy cove to a deep clear cove by the dam.”
