Today’s historical news photo isn’t terribly old, only going back a little over 25 years, but it features an interesting combination – Terry Segraves, professional angler from Florida, and skirted twin-tailed grubs (think Yamamoto). Terry had just used these baits to secure a second-place finish (tie) in a 1999 BASSMASTER Top 150 tournament on the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, which earned him $33,000.
In the article, Terry said, “That spider jig has definitely proved itself all over the country, but nobody’s really got on them in Florida…When the worm bite or the Rat-L-Trap bite got slow, I’d pick up the spider jig and swim it a little bit, just move it along over the holes in the hydrilla.”
Over the course of his career, which might not be 100% completed yet, he had fished 150 Bassmaster events, qualifying for one Classic and garnering a pair of second place finishes. His first BASS event is listed as the 1992 Florida Invitational held at Leesburg, and his most recent event was just 2 years ago at the 2023 Bassmaster Open at Harris Chain. Additionally, he fished a nearly equal number of FLW Outdoors events, 148 events, including six Top 10 finishes, highlighted by back-to-back Top 10s at Kentucky Lake in 2003-2004.
