Today’s Throwback Thursday historical news photo features a great “old” shot of two “young” professional bass anglers at the time of its publishing in 1981. The title of the newspaper story was, “Top Bass Anglers Will Share Fishing Secrets.” It was featured in the Oroville Mercury Register and detailed the pros coming to the then groundbreaking bass fishing education program, the Bass Fishing Institute.

Featured speakers for this California event, and featured in the photo, were Rick Clunn, at the time the number two all-time money winner and back-to-back Classic winner, and Gary Klein, who finished 2nd in the Bassmaster AOY race in 1979, his rookie year on tour.

Other speakers included Dave Gliebe, then twice winner of the Western Bass Association’s AOY title, and Don Seifert, an electronics expert and regional manager of Lowrance Electronics.

Clunn was set to discuss “overall organization of bass fishing for better results, methods of locating bass in all four seasons, how to establish bass fishing patterns and the versatility and mental attitude required for bringing home a full creel.”

“Gliebe, the only angler to win three different national bass tournaments back-to-back will talk ‘Flippin”, the methods of presenting lures and selection of the proper flippin’ equipment.”

Klein was to talk about fishing the many different lakes of California, while Seifert covered the use of electronic fishing equipment for locating bass.

We’ll have a follow-up tie-in post in tomorrow’s Friday Finale photo and story.
