Today in 150 Bass Fishing Tips – Part Three we continue with the series of previous BFA postings taken from the 1970 Tom McNally’s Fisherman’s Bible. The tips comes from one of the articles the book titled, 150 Bass Fishing Tips from 15 Experts. The idea was that we would periodically post several of these tips from the “experts” of 1970 until we had posted all 150 tips.
With today’s posting, we delve further into these tips including those from Bob Cary, Jack Crawford, and Murray Crowder. As previously discussed, these “15 experts” came from a wide spectrum of bass anglers, some well known and others more obscure. Of the three anglers listed above, there probably won’t be great name recognition for most of our readers, except for Jack Crawford. Nevertheless, they were considered “experts” in their day and their tips remain timeless.
Bob Cary was from the Chicago region and a former outdoor editor at the Chicago Daily News. He apparently gave up the city lifestyle to run an outfitter camp near Ely, Minnesota and chase bronzeback bass. Like a lot of the “experts” from this article, he did freelance writing as well for some of the “big three” outdoor magazines of the time.
Jack Crawford may be a familiar name to those of you who were Fishing Facts magazine readers back in the day. He too was from the north country (Wisconsin) and mostly famous as the manufacturer of quality jigs, which were often advertised in the aforementioned Fishing Facts magazine. Not surprisingly, his tips lean heavily to jig fishing. Check out his tip #4, a recommendation of placing a #1 split ring on the eye of a jig to give it more freedom of movement. Sounds like that could be an interesting tweak to try!
Lastly, tips arrive from Murray Crowder, originally a Midwesterner with deep roots in the Ozark region. Check out the grin on his face in the photo of him boating a nice bass in a small inflatable dinghy that truly captures the joy of bass fishing!
I hope you enjoy this look back into the state of the art from 1970. We’ll be bringing you more tips in the coming weeks.
