The 1971 Bassmaster season, or as they used to call it, “The Society’s Tournament Trail,” became the second such season where an angler would be recognized for consistency throughout the year. This title, as called out in the 1971 Nov/Dec issue of Bassmaster Magazine, was the Point Scoring Crown, known today as the Angler of the Year award.

Then there’s Dee Thomas and his protégé Dave Gliebe, both just after taking the southern B.A.S.S. events by storm with the new Flippin’ technique. Another western legend in this mix is Mike Folkestad, who also put a hurtin’ on some of the events in the east and still takes a good sum of cash from western anglers today.

The third event at Ross Barnett would be a different story, though. Martin missed the event, which would give Dance some breathing room. Dance ended up the victor of the tournament and by the end of three tournaments, Dance would be in the lead for the new Bass Master Angler of the Year award by 7500 points.

Roland Martin would make his Bass Master tournament debut – which almost didn’t happen after he saw the weights posted at the Eufaula National in 1969. It took some cajoling from Ray Scott to get Martin to test the waters that year – Martin never looked back.
